📺 Ovemio on Android and Android TV
TV box, phone and tablet — every menu item explained.
Installing
Ovemio is installed as an APK file, not via the Play Store. On a TV box the easiest way is the Downloader app: enter the code 6434105, download, open. Instead of the code, the address ovemio.com/app/Ovemio.apk also works. Downloader is also available for Fire TV, but Ovemio has not yet been tested there.
Android asks once whether it may install apps from this source. This permission applies to the app you download with — it is needed because Ovemio does not come from the Play Store.
On a phone it is enough to open the downloaded file.
Operation on the television
On first launch Ovemio recognises by itself whether it is running on a television and then switches over: large side menu, strong focus frame, everything reachable with the directional pad, nothing that would need a mouse pointer.
If the recognition is wrong — on a tablet with a keyboard, say — it can be set by hand under Settings → Playback: “Remote control (TV mode)” or “Mouse and finger”.
- OK opens, Back goes up one level.
- In full screen OK brings up the control bar.
- Up/Down moves on through the channel list.
- For movies and series, the Menu key or a long press on a poster saves the title for later.
Something missing at the edge? Some TVs cut a strip off the picture all the way round, and with it buttons at the edge. Under Settings → Screen margin you then set a frame out to the visible edge: Left and Right make it narrower or wider, Up and Down lower or higher. OK saves, Back cancels. If you hold OK for one second, the frame jumps back to zero; a short press of OK saves that. After that the app stays inside the frame, while channels and films still fill the whole screen in full screen.
Entering your first account
As on Windows: Xtream (server address, user name, password), M3U (list address) or MAC.
Typing with the remote control is tedious and error-prone. Pairing is faster: you first enter the account in Ovemio on your phone, open pairing on the TV box and scan the QR code with your phone. Otherwise one transposed digit in the server address costs ten minutes of searching.
Activating the licence
You don’t need a key to give it a go: Ovemio runs for 24 hours free of charge, once per device, without any payment details — see How to try Ovemio.
Enter the key you have purchased under Settings → Licences and Access.
There you also see the device list — which box, which phone, last used when — and can release a device again.
All menu items
The user manual explains every area and every menu item with pictures, plus which key does what.
When a film stays black
Sound runs, the picture stays black? That was caused by films in 10-bit HEVC, for which some boxes provide no hardware decoder — the app then computed in software, which no box can sustain.
Since version 1.19.149 films on Android take a different playback path that works around it. If it still occurs:
- Switch on the safe video path under Playback.
- If it stays that way, send a report via Support → Report an app bug — it says which decoder took hold.
When something goes wrong
| The picture stutters | Buffer larger, picture size smaller. On weak boxes “a quarter of the pixels” helps noticeably. |
|---|---|
| Switching takes a long time | Buffer smaller — or set it to “Learned” and let the app look for itself. |
| The menu suddenly looks different | The TV recognition has switched over. Set it fixed under Playback. |
| The app starts but stays empty | Check the account: under Licences and accounts it says which list is active and until when it runs. |
Updates
Under Support → Check for updates. If you have an app from a provider, the updates come from them — Ovemio then offers none of its own, because Android would not install a differently signed file anyway.
