All the features of Ovemio
Live TV, movies, series, radio and your own library, on a TV box, phone and PC. Every function is listed here one by one.
Television
Live TV with an electronic programme guide (EPG)
Under every channel you see what is on right now, and during playback the bar shows “Now” and “Next”. The TV guide shows a grid from one hour back to 26 hours ahead. “Search programme” finds a title across all channels. The provider supplies the programme data through the Xtream account, and how much it contains depends on the provider. There is no TV guide for M3U lists and MAC portals.
Pause and “Restart programme”
If the provider keeps an archive for a channel, the current programme can start from its beginning. Pausing works then too: the picture continues later from the same point, and “Back to live” jumps to the current picture. The archive is kept by the provider. The app does not create a buffer of its own on the device, and live TV cannot be rewound.
Admissions, immediate or planned
A programme currently being broadcast can be recorded at the touch of a button. Upcoming programmes can be scheduled using the TV guide. Recordings are stored in a dedicated section.
Sports with fixtures and scores
For football, handball, basketball, ice hockey, Formula 1 and darts, the Sports section shows every match with its time and league, 8 days ahead. It names a channel only if the provider's programme guide lists the match. Otherwise the line stays empty. OK switches to the channel of a match in progress or schedules a recording for an upcoming one. Scores arrive every 2 minutes. Each profile chooses its sports, leagues and clubs and sets under “Goal alerts” what runs across the picture: nothing, only the favourite clubs, everything from its own selection or all live matches. The ticker appears in Live TV just as it does with films, series and recordings.
Fast switching with a self-regulating buffer
The app continuously monitors the performance of the box and the connection, and automatically adjusts the buffer size and video path. There is no setting that the viewer needs to adjust manually. If you wish, you can set fixed values.
Audio and subtitle tracks
Language and subtitles are switched during playback, with readable names instead of numbers, in live TV too. You can choose from whatever the stream carries.
Radio from the public directory
Radio stations are sourced from the open directory ‘Radio Browser’. The user selects their stations, and the app saves only this list.
Channel logos and programme images
Logos and images are loaded once and then stored on the device. When the app starts up, it retrieves the list from the cache rather than reloading everything.
Films and TV series
Details, cast and trailer
Poster, plot, running time and rating come from the provider, as far as it supplies them. With your own free TMDB key, the cast with photos, the age rating and the trailer are added. Trailers play via YouTube: before loading the first one, the app asks whether it may connect to YouTube for this, and remembers the answer.
Other films featuring the same actor
Selecting a name in the cast shows which other films with this person are in your own catalogue.
Choose the quality on the film page
If the provider has a film in several qualities, say 4K and Full HD, the quality is chosen on the film page. After a switch, playback continues at the same point. In the film list, each version remains a separate entry.
Carry on watching on any device
The app remembers per profile where a film or an episode was stopped. That position is synchronised end-to-end encrypted between devices, so you can carry on watching on the box what you started on the phone.
Download and watch offline
The app downloads films, single episodes, whole seasons or complete series to the device, one after another. If the connection drops, it resumes at the same point, provided the server allows it. Without a network, downloads play for up to 7 days without the app reaching the licence server.
A search for everything
A search box finds films, TV programmes, channels, recordings and your own collection, and tells you where each item was found.
Personal collection and NAS
Films, series and pictures from the device, from a USB stick or from a NAS reachable via WebDAV, HTTP or FTP, with username and password too. The app reads folder and file names. It takes posters from the folder or, with a TMDB key, from TMDB. It shows photos as a gallery or as a slideshow.
Order and Family
Profiles with a face of their own
Each profile has its own colour, design, language, watchlist and history. It can be protected with a four-digit PIN.
Profiles on all devices
All devices with the same licence key share their profiles, whether TV box, phone, tablet, Windows PC or Mac. Settings, favourites, watchlist, the resume point, sorted and hidden categories and the VPN accounts travel with the profiles. Syncing works field by field: if you change the language on your phone and the colour on the TV box, you keep both. What has been deleted does not come back via another device. Your viewing position goes out encrypted as soon as you press pause, an episode ends or you leave the player; settings and favourites after 20 seconds without further changes. Another device fetches it when you open a film, a series or a section there, at start-up and when you return to the app. If you press pause in the living room, you carry on watching in the bedroom at the same spot. Staying on the device are account details and playlists, recordings, downloads, the radio list and settings that belong to the device, such as the buffer. Channel favourites only fit where the same playlist is running.
Child protection through age ratings
A kids profile shows films and series only up to the selected age rating, FSK 0, 6, 12 or 16. The ratings come from TMDB, which requires your own free TMDB key. Without it, the kids profile shows no films or series. In Live TV, only the approved categories appear. Categories and channels that the provider labels or names as 18+ are always hidden in the kids profile. In the kids profile, the settings only open with the PIN of an adult profile. This only takes effect once every adult profile has a PIN: from the kids profile you can switch without a prompt into an adult profile that has no PIN, and there the settings are open. The app names such profiles when you switch profiles and in the settings. If no adult profile has a PIN yet, the settings stay open, and the app says so at the top of the settings.
Categories as you want them
Categories can be hidden and reordered per profile, separately for live TV, films and series. The provider's list is only the starting point.
Favourites and Watchlist
In Live TV, channels get a star per profile. “Favourites” sits in the category list right below the TV guide and shows all marked channels, including those from hidden categories. Channels rated 18+ are listed separately under “Favourites 18+”; in the kids profile this entry is missing. Films and series are saved to “Watchlist”, which sits directly below “Continue watching”.
Sources and formats
Xtream account, M3U, MAC portal and your own files
Sources can be Xtream accounts, M3U and M3U8 lists via their web address, MAC portals and files from the device or the network. Several playlists can be saved and switched; one is always active.
Main URL and up to nine extra URLs
Many providers hand out several server addresses for the same Xtream account. Up to ten can be entered; username and password apply to all of them. If the provider sets up the app via box number or QR code, they send all of them and decide for each address whether the customer sees it, only its name or nothing at all. The same way, up to three accounts with their own username reach the box, each as a separate list. For each address you set whether it is “Off”, “Automatic” or “Only this one”. The app stays with the main URL as long as it responds. If it does not respond for 20 seconds in a row, the next address set to “Automatic” steps in. If that one fails as well, the one after it takes over after 5 seconds. Channel changes, films, episodes, recordings and downloads then run over it. At the next start the main URL applies again. The extra URLs are a premium service. They run as an open beta and are free for every licence until 30 September 2027. The app lets you know 30 days before the end. After that they can be added for €10 a year including VAT. The subscription renews annually and can be cancelled at any time, effective at the end of the paid year, also in the app under Account details. Without a subscription, the account continues to run via the main URL. The extra URLs are locked during the 24-hour trial.
Set-up by QR code
A QR code valid for 10 minutes appears on the TV box. Ovemio on the Android phone scans it, provided the account is already set up there, and sends account and licence to the TV box in encrypted form. From a PC, a 12-character code is typed in instead. No more spelling things out with the remote.
Two playback paths
Live TV is streamed via the Android hardware decoder (ExoPlayer). If a stream fails there, the app switches to libmpv. Films in HEVC 10-bit use the hardware decoder. The user does not need to change any settings.
Technology and comfort
VPN built in
On Android, up to three OpenVPN accounts are stored in the app and switched on and off there. No additional program is needed on the TV box. If an account fails or the connection drops, the app takes the next one after one second, unless a fixed VPN has been selected. On Windows the app does not connect by itself; the Windows VPN applies there.
Performance test with a grade
In about a minute the app measures memory, processing power, how smoothly the interface runs and how the first channel in the list plays. On Android it also reads out whether the chip decodes H.264, HEVC, HEVC 10-bit and AV1 itself. At the end there is a grade from “Very good” to “Weak”.
Adjust the picture
Picture size and the safe picture path are changed by hand if a weak TV box needs it. If a TV box cannot keep up, the app also scales down effects and the image cache by itself in up to three steps, starting with the glass design. After 15 minutes without problems it undoes one step.
Adjust screen margin
Some TVs cut a strip off the picture all the way round, and with it buttons at the edge. Under Settings → Screen margin you then use the arrow keys to set a frame out to the visible edge, up to 10% each on the left and right and at the top and bottom. Menus, buttons, dialog boxes and the control bar in the player then stay inside the frame, while the video picture still fills the whole screen in full screen. The app asks once by itself whether all four corners are visible. The margin applies per device and only in TV mode. It does not reach windows that Android draws itself, such as the installation of an update.
In-app support, encrypted
If your provider looks after its customers through Ovemio, you can reach it by chat straight from the app, and on devices with a microphone also by voice message of up to 60 seconds. Text and voice are end-to-end encrypted. You send a bug report to Ovemio under Settings → Support → “Report app bug”, without signing in. The app encrypts it on the device itself. The log is included by default and can be switched off.
Updates without the Store
The app announces new versions itself and installs them on request. No Play Store is needed for it.
24 languages, per profile
The interface is available in 24 languages. The language is selected on a per-profile basis, not just per device.
Designed for remote control
Each screen can be navigated using the four arrow keys and the OK button. On mobile phones and PCs, you can use touch, the mouse and the keyboard.
Android TV, Android, Windows, Mac
The app runs from Android 7.0 on devices with Android TV or Google TV, on televisions from Sony, Xiaomi, Hisense or Philips, for example, as well as on TV boxes and Nvidia Shield, and also on Android phones and tablets. For 64-bit Windows there is an installer, and for the Mac with Apple silicon (M1 and newer, macOS 12 or later) a DMG file checked by Apple. The app has not yet been tested on Fire TV. A version for iPhone and iPad is in preparation.
Licence
Buy once, three devices, updates to major version 1 included
A licence is valid permanently for three devices of your choice, freely distributed across TV box, phone and PC. The licence itself is not a subscription. It receives every update to major version 1 (versions 1.x) for the base version, that is, for everything except the premium services we offer separately. There is currently one of these: the extra URLs. After their open beta, which ends on 30 September 2027, they can be added as a separate annual subscription for €10. A future major version 2 would be a separate product. On Android the app can be tested free of charge for 24 hours before buying.
Own brand for suppliers
Large-scale customers receive the app under their own name and logo, complete with licence management, support chat and remote maintenance via the BigC support app.
No content included
Ovemio It does not provide any channels, films or playlists. The app is a media player for sources that the user enters themselves, and for which they are responsible for ensuring their legality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which sources does Ovemio support?
Xtream accounts, M3U and M3U8 lists via a web address, MAC portals and your own files from the device, from a USB stick or from a NAS via WebDAV, HTTP or FTP.
Ovemio runs on which devices?
From Android 7.0 on devices with Android TV or Google TV, on TV boxes, Android phones and tablets, plus on 64-bit Windows and on the Mac with Apple silicon. Ovemio has not yet been tested on Fire TV. A version for iPhone and iPad is in preparation.
How much dOvemio cost?
A licence costs a one-off 9.99 euros including VAT and is valid permanently for three devices. Updates to major version 1 are included for the base version; the licence is not a subscription. Premium services offered separately are excluded. Currently that is only the extra URLs: they are free until 30 September 2027 and can then be added as an annual subscription for 10 euros.
Can Ovemio record and pause live TV?
Recording, yes: the current programme until it ends, or for 30 to 120 minutes. Future programmes are scheduled in the TV guide; the app must be open at broadcast time. Pausing and “Restart programme” work on channels for which the provider keeps an archive. The app cannot rewind live TV or catch up on missed programmes.
Does Ovemio need a VPN app?
Not on Android. There, up to three OpenVPN accounts are stored directly in the app, and if one fails, the app takes the next one after one second. On Windows, Ovemio does not connect a VPN itself; there the traffic goes through the VPN set up in Windows.
Does Ovemio include TV channels or films?
No. The app does not contain any content. Users enter their own sources.
